Bike Charity Giveaway

We hear a lot about child obesity these days so three years ago a bike charity was set up in Utah to provide bicycles for 1,000 underprivileged kids. The charity was set up by Debbie Reid with the aim of providing both a positive education and a cycling experience for disadvantaged children. The first event took place on the 30th September 2006. The format was simple there were 3 different rides, one a family ride of 5 kilometers, the second a 100 kilometer ride and finally a 50 kilometer ride with Dave Zabriskie the third American to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France.

From 10:30 a.m. on the day of the event and every half hour after that bikes were delivered by local and political leaders to a new group of children. In addition to the bikes the youngsters were given helmets and t-shirts and a lock for each bicycle. They also got to attend a bike fair and were given instruction in cycle safety and how important it is to obey traffic signals and wear helmets. The youngsters were chosen from Boys & Girls Club of Murray, the Guadalupe School and Rose Park Elementary.

What is so good about this initiative is that firstly it gives these kids a fun way of getting to school which costs little or nothing. In addition they are getting regular exercise and a sense of responsibility in owning and looking after their own bicycle. The provision of any equipment like this which encourages physical and mental activity should be applauded.

The bike charity has been so successful has that they are now organizing their third annual event.

    Dear Debbie Reid,

I wanted to reach out to you and your bike club about a 2009 fund-raiser to benefit JDRF, a local bike ride in the SLC area. I would love to hear your comments, suggestions.

This ride is to tie into the SLC Century Ride on May 16, 2009. The JDRF Organization is asking that if a person wants to be included in this ride the minimum funds to raise is $750. That price would include entry into this May ride date, and receive a bike jersey designed for the ride.

My personal thoughts are that is a lot of money to raise for one person. What would be your suggestion to capture most bike enthusiasts such as yourself? How many people would get invloved in a ride? What would be an average dollar amount most people would be willing to raise?

I know the MS 150 in Logan is a two day 150 mile ride, the entry is not much and there are specific fund-raiser levels for gaining awards. What would you recommend to gain the most riders?

Is there a calendar on the intranet that details all bike rides, fund-raiser?

We had a great 1st annual JDRF ride last Aug. 2nd, a 40 mile ride I designed from the west SLC areas to east side in 9 cities within the SLC Valley area. We had 5 rest stops at either bistros or coffee shops. This ride was not a race but a social event, each rest stop was set up for the riders, free POWERade, free coffee, free tea, etc. We kicked our shoes off at each stop and socialized for about 15 minutes each stop. I look to put this event on again next year(June? July?). What would be your thoughts to help gain riders to raise funds for a great cause?

I am open to your thoughts, suggestions. Could we tie into your event or help support each other?

    Thank you for your time,
